Cognitive Semiotics in User Interfaces

Andrea Lee

Description of Topic

Cognitive Semiotics is the study of the communication of meaning and interpreting symbols using cognitive science. This includes the study of how symbols develop their meanings as well as how these meanings are conveyed to others. User interfaces commonly use symbols to represent the assigned functions of different controls. Thus, to understand a user interface, users must properly interpret the symbols it uses. With a proper understanding of cognitive semiotics, more intuitive symbols can be assigned to the functions of user interfaces. Users could understand the controls of user interface they would otherwise be unfamiliar with.
