PROGRAMMING CONTESTS

Algoma College, November 8th, 2003

Each year the ACM holds its International Collegiate Programming Contest. The contest is the oldest and largest programming competition for the world's universities and colleges. Regional contests are held at selected sites around the world and the winners go to the finals at the annual ACM conference (a major event in itself).

In 2003 MTU sent four teams to the North Central regional contest at the Algoma University College in Sault Ste Marie, Canada.

MTU Blue (Joe Nievelt and Kyle Rokos) finished 3rd and qualified for the finals in Prague - the first time ever for MTU!

Next November the CS Department will again send up to five teams to the North Central regional contest at LSSU in Sault Ste Marie. A qualifying team will get a free trip to the finals in March, 2005 (location not yet announced) to compete with teams from around the world for scholarships and "bragging rights".

Note the key words here:
scholarships, free trips, bragging rights

NMU (Saturday, March 20)

Each spring Northern Michigan University holds an ACM-like contest. It gives teams a chance to hone their skills in preparation for the next ACM contest in the fall.

The CS Department will be taking a van-full of students to the contest, leaving around 9am and returning around 8pm the same day. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Poplawski.
